Olsany Cemetery, Zizkov, Prague, Czech Republic. A survey of the haunted site. During paranormal investigations in Prague in September 2014, all local paranormal investigators pointed me to Olsany. Local legends are abundant in regard to witnessed ghost sightings. Olsany Cemetery, the biggest municipal cemetery in the city, lies in the district of Zizkov. Prague itself is one of the most haunted cities in Europe, if not the World. Every cemetery, castle, church, beer cellar and street seems to have a ghost of its own.

Olsany Cemetery was built in 1680, as an emergency measure, to cater for the many thousands of refugees who were swamping Prague, carrying The Black Death with them. In Vienna, in 1679, a pandemic of The Black Death, or Bubonic Plague, broke out. It was a very virulent strain which ultimately claimed 76,000 lives. It has been since called " The Great Plague of Vienna ". Many of the people of Vienna tried to escape the horrific effects of The Black Death, by fleeing to Prague. So many people were dying of the highly infectious disease, the graveyards of Prague could not cope - so Olsany was created as a communal Plague Pit.

The idea was to rapidly process the infected dead, plus try and prevent Prague suffering a pandemic itself. The attempts were all in vain. In 1681 Prague suffered a pandemic of The Black Death, which took the lives of 83,000 of its population. All of these Plague Dead were buried at Olsany. Within just 2 years of its conception, Olsany Cemetery had already been filled with over 100,000 Plague Dead.

Most of the existing Mausoleums and Charnel Houses of Olsany are Victorian in origin, as are the Momento Mori statues and gravestones. Olsany also holds some of the most famous Czech citizens from history. A very large site. Too many ghosts have been reported from this Necropolis to try and identify them. But for all the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and more recent burials - under all of these lie the skeletons of over 100,000 Plague Victims.
