I absolutely LOVE Prunus caroliniana, commonly known as Carolina Cherry. It makes a fantastic hedge tree and creates a beautiful backdrop to the landscape. It can screen off property lines, unsightly views, and can even be used as a small shade tree.

Native Range: Southeastern United States (from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas).
Plant Type:
Evergreen shrub or small tree.
Can grow 15–40 feet (4.5–12 meters) tall.
Leaves:
Simple, glossy, dark green, lance-shaped.
Emit a cherry-like fragrance when crushed.
Toxic if ingested due to cyanogenic compounds.
Flowers:
Small, white flowers in clusters (racemes).
Bloom in early spring (February–April).
Fragrant, attracting bees and pollinators.
Fruit:
Small, black to dark blue drupes (appear in late summer to fall).
Eaten by birds, aiding seed dispersal.
Inedible for humans due to toxicity.

Prefers well-drained soils (sand, loam, or clay).
Tolerates drought and salt, making it suitable for coastal areas.
