STORYLINE:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Iranian counterpart in Moscow on Monday to discuss what can be done to preserve the Iran nuclear deal after U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to scrap the U.S. participation in the agreement.
Russia is one of the six signatories to the landmark Iran nuclear deal, which has been endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.
Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed in 2015 was "based on the balance of obligations between the Iranian side and Europe including the United States."
"After the United States pulled out, this balance is undermined. We should see how we can secure the interests of the Iranian people," Zarif said.
Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 accord under which Iran would curb its nuclear programme, last Tuesday.
He said the accord that allowed for the lifting of sanctions wasn't tough enough on Iran.
Iran had said it may resume uranium enrichment at a higher rate if it finds the nuclear deal will not work anymore after the US withdrawal.
