Some more context for this question. I’m trying to prepare my late mother-in-law’s iPad mini for my father-in-law to use. It’s only ever had her Apple ID created on it, and that was a number of years ago - she died 2 years ago and it was well before that.
So I wiped it using her Apple ID, then tried to set it up for my father-in-law. But it tells me
Could Not Create Account
Your account cannot be created at this time.
According to Apple Support online:
If you see a Could Not Create Apple ID message, it means that you have exceeded the number of new Apple IDs you can set up with iCloud on a single device in one year.
However, no attempt has been made to create an account from this device in over 5 years, and hers it the only one that was ever created on this device. It’s hardly been turned on in the last two years.
I’m using a Gmail account as his Apple ID if that matters, and I’d rather not create another - he’s in his 90s and doesn’t need more confusion.
Any idea how I can resolve this?
