(26 Sep 2018) New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern isn't interested in engaging with President Donald Trump at this year's UN general assembly, despite the two nations' differences on key world issues.
"My goal is simply to represent New Zealand's views and New Zealand's values, regardless of how that shapes up or stacks up against any world leader," Ardern said at a press conference on Wednesday. "We are believers in multilateralism, we have benefited by having a predictable rule book when it comes to issues like trade."
Internationally, Ardern in many ways offers a counterpoint to President Donald Trump: She is young, liberal and espouses an empathetic approach to leadership.
She's also pushed the boundaries for women by becoming just the second world leader in modern times to give birth while in office.
On her agenda are combating climate change, promoting global trade and supporting the rights of women and children.
She's traveling with her partner, Clarke Gayford, and their 3-month-old daughter, Neve, who she says has been mingling with other world leaders at state functions.
"Politicians love holding babies," she said.
