Our oceans are not in a very good ecological state at all.
A report done by the European Environmental Agency in 2020 showed that over 80% of EU seas had been suffering massive biodiversity loss.
If we don’t start protecting and restoring our waters, there will be no fish left in the ocean and if there’s no fish left, there’s no fishing industry left either.
The Nature Restoration Law is a law that was proposed last year to restore 20% of EU seas and 20% of EU land.
Now, this law is extremely important because over 80% of EU habitats are in bad environmental condition and the laws that we have in place already, such as the Habitats Directive, as clearly not doing enough.
So, it’s really important that Irish MEPs support this law because every vote is going to count at this stage.
It’s already been shown by the Irish Citizens Assembly on Biodiversity that the Irish people want a strong Nature Restoration Law and they want our natural habitats restored.
There’s also been cross party acknowledgement in the Dáil for the Nature Restoration Law, which is a rare thing.
So we need our European representatives to listen to the Irish government and listen to the Irish people and support this law next week.
So the best thing that everybody can do right now is to go to the Irish Wildlife Trust website and fill in the quick and easy email tool.
It only takes about a minute or so.
The email is already written for you and it will be sent to all Irish MEPs, voicing your support and asking them to support this Nature Restoration Law.
It definitely is working – this is the biggest thing that everybody can do for nature right now.
There is nearly 1 million people have signed it.
And Ireland is actually fourth out of the EU for the amount of people that have signed this email tool.
So we need to keep the momentum going and we need to keep the pressure on.
