Covid-19 has shown us: A pandemic not only is a medical disease. It is also like to result in a social disease, with lots of insecurities and resistance widespread.
So, what can be done to stop a pandemic?
Instead of repeating same old messages of precautions, often one-sided and even top-down, and which more and more fail to reach a critical mass of people, Malteser International (MI) makes use of the People First Impact Method, in short: P-FIM, which emphasizes listening as the first and very foundation to build a trustful relationship among all within the community and towards relief workers.
In the DR Congo, MI could gain evidence even twice, during Ebola and Covid-19 outbreaks, that projects based in P-FIM not only help during pre-assessments, but also for a strong and stable implementation. The communities – their leaders, but also the marginalized groups within – engaged in the realization and promotion of pandemic precaution measures, as the policies and measures they carried out where their own, and not imported by foreigners.
This video is for all who would like to know more about P-FIM, who have the feeling that listening has been un-learned so far, and for all who believe that a new communication culture is needed when a collective answer is wanted.
