Gümüşhane is a province of Turkey, located in the Eastern Black Sea Region. It is bordered by Bayburt in the east, Giresun in the west, Trabzon in the north and Erzincan in the south.
Gümüşhane is a name given to the city later. It was registered as "Gümüshane" for the first time in the 18th century, even in the Ottoman Financial Registers. Before that, the city center was known as "Canca" for more than 1200 years, and as the name of the region together with its districts as "Khalybia/Haldia" for thousands of years. Gümüşhane is a combination of Turkish: Gümüş + Persian: Hane/Yurt/Diyar and means "Silver House/Land".
Established in a narrow valley formed by the Harşit Stream at an altitude of 1150 m above sea level, Gümüşhane has been an important center throughout history due to the existence of silver deposits that go back to ancient times and its location on the historical Silk Road.
After the Trabzon Province, which was abolished with the proclamation of the Republic, Gümüşhane; It gained provincial status by covering the districts of Torul, Kelkit, Şiran and Bayburt. In 1989, Bayburt received the status of a province and separated from Gümüşhane. Today, Gümüşhane, which is a province that constantly sends immigrants, continues to emigrate due to the lack of sufficient job opportunities.
The lands of the province, which is located in the North Anatolian mountain range, are very rugged and the highest point exceeds 3,000 meters in the mountains known as Çakırgöl today. The northern part of the province is surrounded by the Zigana (Kalkanlı) and Soğanlı mountains, and the south by the Çoruh, Kelkit, Kop and Otlukbeli mountains. Some small plains in Kelkit Valley are the most important agricultural areas of the province.
