On India Upfront, with Rahul Shavshankar, today we take a look into the Karnataka Government's action on illegal loudspeakers in the state. The government has moved to enforce the High Court's orders on the removal of illegal loudspeakers in all religious places, with no exceptions. Notices were issued to over 200 mosques and temples. This was done to ensure that loud broadcasts during festivals do not happen, as they seem to disturb others in the neighborhood. Like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Bihar too jumped on the bandwagon.
Janak Ram, Minister of Mines and Geology of Bihar, was calling for a regulation for loudspeakers in masjids and during Azaan, and similar actions to be taken for other such activities. "If there are people of all religions living nearby, then there is some sort of obstruction," he added.
