In this episode we will walk through a couple of the most iconic places in Milan: Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery & La Scala.
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery) is Italy's oldest active shopping gallery. Housed within a four-story double arcade in the centre of town, the Galleria is named after Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy. It was designed in 1861 and built by architect Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1877.
The structure consists of two glass-vaulted arcades intersecting in an octagon covering the street connecting Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala. The street is covered by an arching glass and cast iron roof, a popular design for 19th-century arcades. On the ground of the central octagonal, there are four mosaics portraying the coat of arms of the three capitals of the Kingdom of Italy (Turin, Florence and Rome) plus Milan's.
The Galleria connects two of Milan's most famous landmarks: The Duomo and the Teatro Alla Scala.
Teatro alla Scala is a famous opera house, inaugurated on 3rd August 1778 and was originally known as the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala (New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala) which was rebuilt after a fire. The premiere performance was Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta. 🎶
Most of Italy's greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from around the world, have appeared at La Scala. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres globally. It is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet, La Scala Theatre Orchestra, and the Filarmonica della Scala orchestra. The theatre also has an associate school, known as the La Scala Theatre Academy, which offers professional training in music, dance, stagecraft, and stage management. 🩰
