A LLCPK1 alpha cell undergoing mitosis - imaged from metaphase through cytokinesis. GFP tagged tubulin allowed fluorescence imaging of microtubules. Images were taken once every 30 seconds for 50 minutes.
Science lingo translation:
Cells from the skin of a pig kidney were put onto a dish and movies were taken of them as they divided. A glowing protein from jellyfish, called green fluorescent protein (GFP) was previously added into the DNA of these cells, so that a structure called microtubules always glows green. Microtubules are the railroad tracks of the cells, and are responsible for carrying things around the cell. During cell division they carry the two copies of DNA to either side of the cell. This video lets you see the microtubules, glowing green, as they move DNA during cell division. The DNA can be seen as the black shadow in the middle of all of the microtubules.
