The Constitutional Court has given parliament, the president, IEC and the Department of Home Affairs - who are the respondents in the Electoral Act matter - until the 8th of August to make their submissions regarding an application by the Independent Candidates Association.
Almost two months ago the association approached the Concourt seeking direct access on an urgent basis to challenge what they find to be the flaws in the newly amended Electoral Act.
The Act was passed into law in February this year, but civil society organisations and other interest groups are arguing that the Act in its current form is still biased against independent candidates from standing for Public Office in the country. Dr Michael Louis is the Chairman of the Independent Candidates Association and an applicant to the Councourt, and he joins us now to discuss this.
