The Obara area of Toyota City in Aichi prefecture in northern Honshu is home to a unique variety cherry blossoms known as shikizakura ("four-season cherry blossoms") that bloom twice a year—once in the spring and once in the fall. In autumn you may view cherry blossoms at the same time as the fiery red colors of autumn leaves. The area celebrates this unusual combination of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves in mid-November to early December by holding a festival. Cherry blossoms normally only bloom in the spring.
Takayama City, located in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture in northern Honshu, is known for its well-preserved historical architecture and as a base for exploring the scenic alpine countryside of the Japan Alps.
The Hirugano Kogen service area in Gifu Prefectures offers a panoramic view of surrounding mountains on the way to the World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go, one of three mountainous villages in Gifu and Toyama Prefectures in the Japan Alps known for its traditional thatched farmhouses built in the gassho-zukuri (合掌造り) style, which are designed to easily shed snow from their steep roofs. Some are more than 250 years old. Shirakawa-go, in Gifu Prefecture hosts the largest number of the houses built in this style.
