STORYLINE:
Security has been heavily stepped up on Lake Leman as the heads of state of leading developing countries gather in the Swiss city Lausanne across the lake from the G8 summit of leading world powers in the French city Evian.
An entire section of Lausanne's lake shore was closed to the public, including a ferry dock where on Sunday the leaders will be shuttled across the lake to the French resort of Evian-les-Bains where G-8 leaders are meeting June 1-3.
The countries invited are the leading lights of NEPAD - the New Partnership for Africa's Development - as well as major developing countries from other parts of the globe.
Authorities are also bracing up for demonstrations around the shores of Lake Leman, due to kick off tonight with a"fires around the lake" display.
Up to 300,000 demonstrators are expected to protest against the summit, with events and marches planned in Lausanne on Saturday and Sunday.
The main activities in Geneva and protests in the French city of Annemasse will be accompanied by individual "actions" already taking place in Switzerland and France.
Also attending are the heads of the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization and the World Bank.
