(1 Nov 2020) Election officials in the former Soviet state of Georgia confirmed Sunday that the ruling Georgian Dream party has won the country's parliamentary elections.
They said Georgian Dream had secured 48% of the vote, compared to 27% for the opposition United National Movement.
When the polls closed late Saturday, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili quickly claimed victory for Georgian Dream, although it wasn't immediately clear if it had won enough votes to stay at the helm.
An opposition alliance around former president Mikhail Saakashvili refused to concede defeat and said it wanted to form a new coalition government.
The results only cover the proportional system which allocates 120 seats in 150-seat parliament.
An additional 30 seats will be determined by the single-mandate majority vote, which hasn't been counted yet.
