In large enterprise networks, you probably don't want to give all of your network engineers the enable secret password of your routers. For example, if someone leaves the company, you would have to reset the password on all of your devices. A much more scalable approach is to use an external authentication server. This video compares two external authentication server options, RADIUS and TACACS+.
