'쎈돌' 이세돌, 국산 AI 한돌 상대로 첫 승..."또 하나의 묘수 나왔다"
The South Korean Go master Lee Se-dol has beaten another AI program.
Lee Se-dol is the only human to have beaten Google's AlphaGo in a match three years ago.
This time, for Lee's retirement, it's a three-game series against an AI called HanDol, developed here in Korea, and Lee won the first round.
Our Kan Hyeong-woo was at the match and he joins us now.
Hyeong-woo?
Devin, what a win for South Korean Go master Lee Se-dol against another AI program. Before today's match,... most experts and analysts expected Lee to lose.
But his AI opponent, the Korean-developed program HanDol, resigned -- the same result as when Lee beat Google's AlphaGo in one match in 2016.
Dozens of media outlets sent reporters to see whether the South Korean Go master could pull off another improbable win.
Lee started the match by placing two handicap black stones to offset the program’s superiority.
If you're not familiar with the game of Go, or Baduk in Korean, it's a game for two players who take turns putting black or white stones on a 19-by-19 grid.
Players need to surround their opponents pieces with their own to win. So it's about having a bigger territory.
The initial build-up went as expected, but HanDol first took a jab at the Korean Go master... trying to capture Lee's black stones in the middle.
Cornered and faced with a difficult situation,... Lee picked up the stone for a critical move at the 78th turn.
Commentators and experts were shocked by Lee's decision...calling it "a move no one could have thought of."
From there, HanDol was shaken up and kept making irrational moves,... eventually resigning at the 92nd turn.
It definitely does sound like a pleasant surprise for Go fans in Korea. But how is the Korean-made Handol different from AlphaGo? And when's the next match in this series?
Now Handol is a Go-playing AI program developed by Korean gaming company NHN in December 2017. The company was inspired by Lee Se-dol's match against Google's AlphaGo and began developing the software.
Based on a self-learning machine that studies the game's algorithm, HanDol quickly incorporated a vast amount of past Go matches.
Earlier this year, Handol took on five of Korea’s top Go playser ...including then world champion Park Jung-hwan, and beat them all in a relay match... whereas Lee Se-dol has not played an official match since July.
As for the ratings that indicate a player's Go abilitiy, the AI HanDol has an estimated rating of 45-hundred, which compares to 37-hundred for AlphaGo and about 35-hundred for an average top-ranked human player.
His next match against the AI will start tomorrow around noon at this same spot.
Because the South Korean Go master won today,...Thursday's game will begin without any handicap stones.
Saturday's last match will then move to Jeollanam-do Province where Lee was born.
We will be following up on those games as well.
Devin.
