When my friend first alerted me of the American Avocet babies in the San Francisco Bay, I promptly visited the marshland the next morning. Unfortunately, I met no Avocet babies because they were all gone, probably snatched by the seagulls and the hawks. Since there were multiple Avocet nests in the area, I returned to the Bayshore time after time. On my third try, I finally got to meet these newly hatched chicks. The experience gave me a new found appreciation of all the adult American Avocets - how lucky and how tough they need to be in order to make it to adulthood.
