The sailors had no idea that in fact scurvy could not be infected. Over time, people began to notice that scurvy was spreading either on ships or in isolated places on land and that made sailors realize that scurvy is not an infection at all, but a consequence of a lack of vitamin C in the body. It meant that the diet of seafarers and employees in the navy should be radically revised. From that moment to raise the vitamin C levels, sailors began to eat cranberries, lemons, oranges and pickled cabbage.
