Atlantic Puffin🐦
The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica), also known as the common puffin, is a species of seabird in the auk family. It is the only puffin native to the Atlantic Ocean; two related species, the tufted puffin and the horned puffin being found in the northeastern Pacific. The Atlantic puffin breeds in Russia, Iceland, Ireland, Britain, Norway, Greenland, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Characteristics
Atlantic Puffins are black above and white below. Breeding birds have a gaudy black, orange, and yellow bill. During the breeding season the face is grayish white. In the nonbreeding season the face turns darker gray, and the bill sheds its yellow highlights and shrinks slightly.
Diet
Atlantic Puffins eat small fish around 2 to 6 inches long, mainly sandlance (sandeel), sprat, capelin, herring, hake, and cod. During the breeding season, they forage in shallow waters close to the breeding colony, generally not straying more than about 10 miles from shore.
Predators
The main predators of puffins are other birds and humans, since other mammals cannot normally gain access to the isolated breeding colonies.
Lifespan
The average puffin life span is 25 years. #nature #naturelovers
