UN DESA, UNDP, International Movement ATD Fourth World, the Permanent Missions of France and Burkina Faso to the United Nations, the International Committee for Oct17 and the NGO Committee for Social Development organized the commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication (IDEP) virtual event on 15 October under the theme “Building Forward Together: Ending Persistent Poverty, Respecting all People and our Planet”.
The Day presented an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and struggles of people living in poverty, for them to make their concerns heard by the UN system and Member States, and for the world to recognize that they are the first ones to fight against poverty.
This year, the focus was on the most affected by the impact of the global pandemic and climate change. As many spoke of ‘Building Back Better,’ people living in extreme poverty expressed that they do not wish a return to the past nor to build back what was before. Instead, they proposed ‘Building Forward Together’ by transforming our relationship with nature, dismantling structures of discrimination that disadvantage people in poverty, and building on the moral and legal framework of human rights that placed human dignity at the heart of policy and action. To highlight this message, the virtual commemoration of IDEP 2021 gave the floor to people with direct experience of poverty who were affected by climate change and environmental degradation, as well as United Nations high level officials and Member States representatives.
