This video discusses the question: “Should alcohol be illegal?” Alcohol contributes to a great deal of suffering including Alcohol Use Disorder, medical health problems, relational problems, and crime, however unlike other drugs, alcohol is legal. Alcohol use is woven into the fabric of our society and it is unlikely it will ever be restricted in any meaningful way. Many individuals use alcohol responsibly and the majority of Americans want to keep alcohol legal. In 1919, the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution banned alcohol (prohibition, effective in 1920), but it was repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment. Opinions as to whether prohibition was successful or not differ, but most consider it a failure. The availability of alcohol presents a difficulty those who have difficulty regulating alcohol use. For most individuals, the decision to abstain from alcohol must be a personal choice.
