For the first time ever in post-Soviet Russia, women can apply to military aviation school.
The change came after hundreds of letters poured in from women expressing their desire to enroll.
In World War II, female Soviet pilots were legendary, flying combat missions against Nazi troops. But policies changed after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Russian Army currently has about 45,000 female soldiers, but pilot training hasn't been offered to women since 1991.
The Krasnodar Aviation High Military School will begin training in October, and will accept 15 female applicants for the first group.
