Sometimes in science you think you know exactly what you’re talking about, others not at all!
In this experiment we capture Hydrogen gas from adding sodium hydroxide to aluminum foil. To test the combustibility of H2 we light it up. H2 produces this billowing soft “boom” with an orange flame. We then capture pure Oxygen gas from mixing 35% hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide. When we light up the pure O2 gas… NOTHING HAPPENS!!! This is because Oxygen gas by itself is not flammable. O2 gas is considered an accelerant meaning it only makes existing flames stronger, brighter, and more explosive. To test this we added our H2 to our O2 in a 2:1 ration. The result was a quicker, brighter explosion that was much louder and shaper.
Theory confirmed! Oxygen gas is an accelerant, not a flammable gas by itself!
