AT&T commissioned Memento in 1968 from Columbia University's Center for Mass Communication. The Center, then managed by filmmaker Sumner J. Glimcher, was the multimedia branch of the Columbia University Press. It specialized in public service campaigns, and was commissioned by the government and private institutions alike.
Memento was originally a 35mm film produced by the CMC for AT&T in order to promote safer driving. The film, using a shocking and effective storytelling technique, won 9 international and national awards.
Glimcher, the executive producer, later became recognized for his documentary work with films found in Japan about Hiroshima and the effects of atomic weapons. Much of Glimcher's work can be found on the web.
AT&T continues to promote the importance of safe driving, especially in conjunction with the use of modern mobile devices. In 2010, the company produced a social media campaign called It Can Wait, the centerpiece of which was a short film, The Last Text. The Last Text, about the dangers of texting while driving, garnered more than 2 million views as of 2012.
