STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin laid flowers at the Minin and Pozharsky Monument in Red Square in Moscow on Saturday to commemorate People's Unity Day - November 4.
Putin was accompanied by students of the Petersburg Nakhimov naval school and the Moscow Suvorov military school.
He chatted casually to the students as the group laid the carnations at the foot of the monument near St. Basil Cathedral.
Putin declared Peoples Unity Day a holiday, on December 29, 2004 cementing the deal in federal law.
People's Unity Day is observed to mark the popular uprising which ejected the Polish-Lithuanian occupying force from Moscow in 1612.
The Russian Orthodox Church and leaders of main Russian religious denominations were the first to mark the occasion.
The day became a symbol of unity for Russian people.
