Face liveness detection is an anti-spoofing method for facial biometrics. It aims at detecting fraudsters trying to fake a biometric system. The core function of a presentation attack detection technology is to determine whether a biometric feature (e.g. a picture), was captured from a live person.

According to the international PAD standard ISO/IEC 30107, fraudulent biometric traits can for instance be derived from photo printouts, paper masks or video replays presented to a camera. Such attacks are carried out at the sensor level and referred to as replay or presentation attacks, as formerly captured facial traits are replayed to a sensor, e.g. a camera.
How BioID’s ISO/IEC 30107-3 compliant liveness detection works:
• Patented motion-based analysis: We capture multiple face images and check for changes and natural motion. A 3D face moves differently from a 2D photo, and our sophisticated algorithms can detect this difference.
• A special motion triggering algorithm automatically activates the capture of the second image as soon as the person moves slightly. Thus, there is no chance for an attacker to quickly present two different images in order to spoof the system.
• AI-based texture analysis for #AntiSpoofing: We detect video replays and other copies like an avatar or deepfake with a special texture-based algorithm that knows when a recaptured version of a person is presented instead of a real face.
• Challenge-response: For additional security it is possible to guide the user to turn their head in a certain, randomized way and verify that the head was turned in the specified direction.

Third party testing by TÜViT confirms ISO 30107-compliance of BioID's Liveness Detection on level 1 and level 2 attacks. The criteria used by TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH (TÜViT) were based on FIDO Biometric Certification Requirements v1.1 and ISO/IEC 30107-3:2017 and are are considered to be stricter than FIDO1.1 and ISO/IEC 30107-3 by TÜViT. The accredited biometric testing laboratory is experienced with regulated third party testing and FIDO certifications.
In addition, a FIDO biometric component certification was achievedin France through a BioID partner solution. The certified KYC identity verification relies on BioID Liveness Detection for fraud prevention. During the FIDO certification process, BioID Liveness Detection performance was successfully audited by the accredited laboratories ELITT/Leti using the standards ISO 19795 and ISO/IEC 30107.
