Speaking in Toronto on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland discussed the Canadian government's $8.9-billion plan to combat the challenges of inflation.
In a keynote address to the Empire Club of Canada, she detailed financial commitments to “help make life more affordable for millions of Canadians” — but the measures were all previously announced.
Freeland said cutting childcare costs while increasing rent supports and supports for low-income workers are all social policies key to combatting rising prices.
Following this speech, Freeland held a media availability, answering questions from reporters.
When asked if she thinks Canada will enter a recession in the next few years, Freeland told the press conference attendees that it is "a time of significant uncertainty" and that she doesn’t have that answer. She said three possible economic scenarios were outlined in the recent federal budget: one favourable, one not ideal and one much more challenging.
