The old "redbird" cars are a classic example of what riders would have experienced in the 1980s-2000s in New York City. Retired in 2003, several of these cars have been preserved for future generations. While the Redbirds served many lines in the NYC Subway system, they are most commonly associated with the 7 Line, where they provided reliable and speedy service to Shea Stadium for decades.
On Saturday, November 9th, 2024, the legendary Redbirds returned to the 7 Line for a movie shoot at Mets-Willets Point station! Here, we see the train heading to, filming at, and returning from Willets Point.
The MTA's museum train program is an industry-leading example of responsible and mindful rolling stock preservation. Widely regarded by peer transit agencies as an example of global best practice, these museum trains are universally recognized as a fundamental part of NYC's cultural scene and are commonly seen in various movie and TV shoots. As such, these are some of the most cash-positive subway trains not only in New York City, but in the entire world! Following the MTA's example as a leader in this field since the 1960s, many other transit agencies, such as Chicago, London, Berlin, Buenos Aires, and Warsaw, have started similar museum train programs.
