A group of youth have warned politicians against the rush to implement constitutional amendment proposed in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
The youth allied to the Amani National Congress (ANC) party said political leaders should allow Kenyans to interrogate the document rather than using it as a contest between themselves. The ANC youth said it would be wrong if the faults identified by some leaders and other Kenyans are ignored saying a review of the proposals was crucial. The youth specifically pointed out the recommendations by their party leader Musalia Mudavadi asking President Uhuru Kenyatta to form a committee to consolidate contentious issues in the report. During the unveiling of the report at Bomas of Kenya, Mudavadi argued that BBI report had downgraded the role of senators in the allocation of resources to the counties. Mudavadi also recommended the appointment of the Ombudsman in the judiciary to be done by the Chief Justice.
He further questioned how counties will receive allocations of 35 percent, an increase from 15, at the time that the country was struggling with ballooning public wage bill.
The ANC national youth spokesperson Nathaniel Mong’are and other officials echoed the sentiments of their party leader while warning politicians against misleading Kenyans. Mong’are said the grey areas must be improved to avoid complicated situations in the future after referendum. Mong’are said if a rush to implement the proposals was done, the gains that have been made through the 2010 constitution will be undermined.
