An icon of the 20th-century avant-garde, Xenakis actually wrote music in a variety of styles, but all of it has an uncompromising toughness. You can dip in anywhere to see if you like (or at least can tolerate) the idiom. Timpani's five-disc set of the complete orchestral works makes a particularly rewarding acquisition, assuming you can find it.
