Açaí is one of my favorite foods so when I traveled to the Amazon in Brazil I was so excited to see where this incredible superfood comes from! Most people think of açaí (acai) as a sweet food because in most places it's served as a smoothie bowl with granola and fresh fruits. When I heard that Brazilians in the state of Pará eat açaí with fish, I was so curious.
We took a boat from Belém, Brazil across the Amazon River to Cumbu Island where we learned how to forage for açaí from the tallest palm trees. Our guide made climbing the trees look so much easier than it actually was!
We were taught how Brazilians turn the açaí seeds into a creamy liquid and were lucky enough to have been served an incredible, traditional meal with grilled fish to accompany the açaí.
Now when I eat açaí, I'm so much more grateful after experiencing how much goes into producing the superfood as well as learning how much it means to the culture in the Amazon!
