The temple’s presiding deity is Shiva as Valaroli Nathar , with Devi Vadivudaiammai . However , the Sannidhi of Bhairavar is more popular and hence the temple is known as Vairavar Temple and the town itself is called Vairavanpatti ( Vairavan is Tamil form of Bhairava ) . Original name : Vaduganathapuram .
The town was granted to the mercantile community of Chettiyars by Sundara Pandyan when they migrated from Chola Desam . The original Siva temple was a brick structure.
It was fully reconstructed by Nagarathars aka Chettiars in mid 19th Century . The architecture is very fine and the temple is taken care of very well , with periodic renovations .
A seperate shrine for a Vinayakar is also situated outside the main Gopuram , facing the large temple pond .
The ceilings of the outer prakaram and the cornices with lion capitals are painted in lively colours . The painting style reflects the Company Art style of the 18th-19th Century period. In addition to the large floral motifs , purana stories are also painted in strips , with captions in Tamil . The ceiling in front of the Bhairavar sannidhi has a large sized painting of Bhairavar .
While the entire temple is built of granite , the Shrine of Bhairavar and the Koshta of Dakshinamurti are made of shiny Black Stone . It is said that the latter has pillars that produce musical notes when struck.
The Holy Tree here is Er-Alinjil Maram , ( Alangium salvifolium) aka Ankola - an interesting species ; Magical properties are attributed to it and hence its products are used in “ Mantrikam” rituals . A stone carving of this tree is also kept in the outer prakaram of the temple .
Vairavanpatti temple is one of the 9 “Nagarathar Clan Temples” . (The 9 are Ilayathagudi , Iluppaikkudi, Iraniyur, Mathur, Nemam, Pillaiyarpatti , Soorakudi, Vairavanpatti and Velangudi. )
