The Spanish government and the opposition Socialists have agreed to hold new elections in Catalonia in January. This comes after the government declared to hold a meeting on Saturday to decide whether to invoke Article 155 of the Constitution, which will allow the national government to suspend the autonomy of a region if it undermines the interests of the country. Earlier, the Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont threatened to announce the independence of Catalonia if Madrid refused to hold talks. Pro-independence groups also called on supporters to withdraw cash from banks as a means of protest.
