A CHILDREN'S counsellor faces jail after he was found guilty of offering to pay a 14-year-old girl £300 for sex.

Brian Pead, 56, of Days Lane, Sidcup, was trapped in an online police sting by an undercover officer posing as a teenager.

Pead, who worked as a therapist for vulnerable youngsters including victims of sexual abuse, later claimed the chats were part of 'research' for his job.

In a series of explicit conversations, Pead offered to meet the girl for sex in central London. He was convicted of attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity by a majority decision of 10 to two.

The jury acquitted Pead of a further charge of exposure after three female drama students in a neighbouring house alleged they had seen him standing by his window naked and performing a sex act.

Prosecutor Tim Forster said Pead had used the pseudonym 'Eight-inch Steve', together with a fake photo in his chats with the undercover officer, who was posing as a 14-year-old girl named 'Shelley'.

During the course of the chats, Pead offered Shelley £300 to have sex with him.

In one message, he wrote: "Hope you're ok.

"I'd love to meet and have been thinking of you.

I'm willing to pay as well, like we've chatted about B4 (sic). Please get in touch. Take care."

Jurors heard a meeting at Southwark London underground station was discussed but was never properly arranged.

In his defence Pead claimed he was carrying out research for his work as a children's counsellor.

The court heard he worked for a counselling agency in Hackney and that some of the children he had dealt with had suffered sexual abuse in the past.

He has since been dismissed from his position.

Pead had previously been dismissed from a job at Lambeth Borough Council for masturbating in a theatre.

He denied attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity between January 27 and May 29 last year and exposure on May 7 last year.

Judge Nicholas Loraine Smith adjourned sentence until January 27 for reports to be compiled.
