Mix & Administer Insulin💉: Clear Before Cloudy Rule!
Managing diabetes requires a disciplined approach, especially regarding insulin administration. This tutorial will delve into the nuanced procedure of mixing insulin doses to ensure effective diabetes management. Our focus will be on mixing short-acting or clear insulin with intermediate or long-acting cloudy insulin in the same syringe, a method your healthcare provider might recommend for better blood sugar control. It's imperative to follow the "clear before cloudy" rule to prevent contamination between the two types of insulin. This rule ensures that the short-acting insulin remains clear and the long-acting insulin remains cloudy, maintaining its effectiveness. Our step-by-step guide will walk you through the process, ensuring you get the accurate dose every time. Whether you are a seasoned diabetic patient or newly diagnosed, understanding the correct procedure to mix and administer insulin is crucial for maintaining optimal blood sugar levels.
**Bulleted Procedure:**
1. Begin by ensuring you have the correct types of insulin: short-acting (clear) and long-acting (cloudy).
2. Roll the bottle of the cloudy insulin between your hands to mix it well.
3. Using an alcohol wipe, clean both bottle tops to ensure sterility.
4. Pull back the plunger of the syringe to the dose of the long-acting (cloudy) insulin, for instance, 15 units, thereby filling the syringe with 15 units of air.
5. Check the insulin bottle to confirm you have the correct cloudy type of insulin.
6. Firmly place the insulin bottle on a counter or tabletop, insert the needle through the rubber cap, and push the plunger down to transfer the air from the syringe into the bottle.
7. Remove the needle and syringe.
8. Repeat steps 4 to 7 for the short-acting clear insulin, adjusting the dose per your healthcare provider’s instructions, in this example, 10 units.
9. Now, with the short-acting insulin bottle turned upside down, keep the tip of the needle in the liquid and withdraw the dose of clear insulin.
10. Remove the needle and syringe.
11. Switch back to the long-acting, cloudy insulin bottle and turn it upside down.
12. Insert the needle into the liquid and slowly pull back the plunger to measure your total combined dose, in this example, 25 units.
13. You are now ready to administer your insulin injection following your healthcare provider's guidelines.
