We had a query from one of our viewers asking "Do I need a Liposuction or a Tummy tuck?" They are confused about which option is right for them.
By understanding what the procedures actually do, you will be able to understand which procedure is ideally suited for you.
Liposuction is a process wherein the fat is sucked out by small incision and we are not doing anything to the skin or the muscle. And relying on the skin elasticity to shrink to the new position once the fat is removed.
So the prerequisites for that would be that your skin quality should be good and you should not have too much of stretch marks or damage to the skin what we call "Lipodystrophy"which hampers the ability of the skin to shrink.
Also if you have lost a lot of weight in a short span of time _ rapid weight loss then also there is a lot of loose skin and liposuction might not be the choice for you.
What is a tummy tuck? As the name suggest tucking involves removal of the excess skin and tightening it and stitching it up. What we do there is suck out the fat and do tightening all the stretch marked loose skin and the skin is contoured with the help of removal of the skin.
How do you decide if you need a tummy tuck or a liposuction?
If you have good abdominal tone and good skin tone without too many stretch marks and only the fat is making the bulges then u can do lipo provided the RECTUS muscle is not spread out and there is no divarication. If skin and abdominal tone is good then liposuction is helpful.
If you have a lot of stretchmarks and loose hanging skin and even when exercising there is a bulge which means divarication of rectus is present and then u need a tummy tuck. Here the fat will be removed with liposuction and the excess skin is removed and more importantly the rectus muscle is repaired to recreate the anterior abdominal wall and tighten the abdomen and make it flat.
Is there an option where you can get away with only a Liposuction even after childbirth? Yes, we do liposuction of patients after childbirth too if the skin quality is good but even in patients with a divarication of rectus the loose muscle and skin, we can do a lipo in the in between waiting period between your kids. We do not touch the muscle or the skin during that time because if you get pregnant again, then all the changes can recur so it doesn't make sense to do it now. We do the liposuction now and then do a formal tummy tuck once you have finished your family.
In the formal tummy tuck we will remove the excess skin and tighten the muscle and contour your tummy well.
