An interesting little location to catch both trams and trains running parallel in Rome is along the Via Casilina between the stops of Villini and Ponte Casilino on the Rome-Giardinetti railway.
Although run by tram vehicles, the Roma-Giardinetti line is a narrow gauge railway which connects Laziali (a regional train station some 800 metres from Temini's main concourse) with Giardinetti to the east just past the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA), Rome's orbital motorway. The line originally ran to Frosinone some 137 km (85 mi) from Rome, but has been gradually reduced in length, most recently when the section from Giardinetti to Pantano, which will become a permanent part of the new C line metro, was taken out of service.
1. One of the newer tramcars is seen departing Villini with a train to Giardinetti.
2. Another one of the newer tramcars arrives with an outbound service whilst one of the older sets (sounding much like a Class 313) is seen departing towards the city.
3. On the mainline to the south, an FS Class 450 Pendolino is seen heading an outbound service to Naples and Salerno.
4. Heading for Rome Termini station is one of FS's Class ME085 DMU's working a regional service from the south. In the background can be seen one of the Roman Aqueducts to the south, built in the time of Emperor Tiberius in around 25AD.
5. Hot on the heels of the ME085 is a Class E.464 working a semi-fast service with double deck DOSTO carriages.
6. A line that is often overlooked is the Rome Avoiding Line which runs from just south of Tiburtina station to the line to Civitavecchia outside of Tuscolana and is many used by cross city services travelling from Orte to Fiumicino Aeroporto using FS Class ALe 426/502 double deck EMU's. Here one is seen passing underneath the two lines with a train to Fiumicino Aeroporto.
7. Back on the mainline, a pair of FS's Leonardo Express units are seen taking the curve to the right onto the Civitavecchia line with a train to Fiumicino Aeroporto.
8. Several of the older tram units meander back and forth between Giardinetti and the city centre.
9. Propelling a push-pull set south out of Termini with a semi-fast working is one of FS's Class E.464 locomotives.
10. A few minutes later, another Class E.464 is seen pushing a similar set of stock south with an ECS working to the yard whilst an older tram set is seen climbing the bank from Ponte Casilino station.
11. At Rome Tuscolana station, on of FS's Class 245 shunters has certainly had a bad time with artists inspired by the works of Banksy as it's corporate FS green has nearly disappeared under a layer of Graffiti. Here it pulls into the station awaiting the signal whilst doing a light engine movement. Unlike in the UK where what fewer shunters we have left are confined to railyards, in Italy they are a frequent sight on the mainline.
Enjoy!
