The inner-city shopping center Limbecker Platz is located on the northwestern edge of Essen's city center , between Limbecker Platz , Berliner Platz and Ostfeldstraße. The first phase was opened on 13 March 2008, the second and last 2009. October 22.
On 1 March 2008, the former Karstadt store on Limbecker Platz was finally closed. The former Karstadt building by Theodor Althoff from 1912 was not a listed building , because only the facade was made of sandstone, the interior was made of reinforced concrete, which was in very bad condition due to damage to the mountains and why the house over the side a height difference of one meter. After the demolition work of the old Karstadt building and the parking garage, on June 1, 2008, its 35 meter high tower was the last existing part of the house to be demolished with 15 kilograms of explosives and 80 detonators. Also, the new shopping center had the Karstadt sports house and the building of the store SinnLeffers(former source ) as well as some food stalls.
On October 22, 2009, the new shopping center Limbecker Platz was opened. The cost of the project is estimated at 300 million euros. The total sales area of 70,000 square meters distributed over three and a half sales levels with about 200 stores. The industry mix consists of sports, gastronomy and food, for example, and is dominated by textiles, hardware and a department store. Every day around 51,000 visitors come to Limbecker Platz, whose extended distance catchment area is estimated by the operator to be 245,348. 2000 employees are employed in the center.
The facade was designed by the architectural firm Henn from Munich and is supposed to evoke the association of a swinging dress. At the entrances, the lower façade finish is raised, thus showing the glass façade behind. The aluminum façade is decorated with lights that give the impression of sequins .
After the old Karstadt department store, formerly the Althoff department store , was closed on 1 March 2008 , it was demolished in mid-March 2008 due to the poor state of repair. To commemorate the Old Department Store, paintings and some sandstones from the old façade will be displayed in the new shopping center.
At the site of the main entrance on the Limbecker Straße , where the old department store stood, a part of the old façade was finally integrated into the new one. A picture of the old department store installed there indicates optically the historical background of the sandstones.
