If you decide to do all or some of your drywall installation yourself, it’s really important that you put safety first as there are many potential dangers.
Here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind:
Improper Lifting
Straining or pulled muscles are common when installing drywall, and it’s caused by the improper lifting of the material. Always have help carrying large sheets. If by chance you can’t, get a drywall lift or jack tools. These tools are always available for rent or can be purchased from tool or home stores.
Placing Loads on the Lift
Be careful and ensure the loads are evenly placed on the lift to prevent them from tipping. Use tools such as board hangar clamps and t-jacks to hold sheets in place for nailing.
Avoid Obstructions
Have drywall sheets delivered as close to the work site as possible to avoid needing to move them. Avoid obstructions that can affect the delivery or storage of materials.
Protect Yourself
Always wear the proper safety equipments such as gloves and a protective mask or goggles when working with drywall to protect yourself from dust from the sanding.
Don’t Get Electrocuted
Make note of where electrical wires and other obstructions are located to avoid getting electrocuted. Avoid drilling or nailing holes above light switches or receptacles. Also, a stud/metal wiring/pipe detection device is handy to have around.
Keep Dust From Circulating in Your Home
Close all heating or A/C vents and cover openings with plastic sheeting in the rooms where work is being done. Clean up at the end of the day to limit dust accumulation.
Using the Right Tools
Always use the proper tools when cutting drywall. Use a sharp razor knife to cut sheets instead of a circular saw. When cutting through existing drywall, use a short metal blade that was specifically made for electric powered reciprocating saws to ensure that you won’t cut into wires or pipes.
