Automobiles are one of Korea's major export items, and shipping companies are busy with more automobile shipments than ever before. Pyeongtaek is catching up with Ulsan as an important automobile export base—both ports have impressive geographical advantages and cutting-edge facilities. Let's take a look.

Here in this pier of the Pyeongtaek port where auto vehicles are shipped, people are busy loading cars into the ships headed for overseas markets.

Upon arrival of a large vessel carrying six cars, vehicles with packages intact are carefully unloaded and sent to the storage yard.

In this wide open-air storage, around 9,000 vehicles are waiting for their turn to go overseas.

In the past year alone, the Pyeongtaek port's combined export and import figures for the automobile sector recorded about 1.2 million dollars. It is the second Korean port to exceed the 1 million dollar mark, the first being Ulsan.

Thanks to the specialized terminal, the port sent 750,000 units to overseas markets and received more than 90 percent of imported cars.

~ Compared to other ports, the Pyeongtaek port doesn't have any concerns regarding dust as it centralized auto export shipments from a specialized terminal.

In addition, the floating pontoon facilities enable it to work 24 hours regardless of the tide.

Currently, the Pyeongtaek port has four designated piers for auto shipment.

Once the fifth pier is constructed, the port might enjoy further synergy effects.

~ We plan to develop one more pier by 2016. We are very confident that the pier will become a major auto export port to ship vehicles to China, Japan and other overseas markets.

Pyeongtaek is on the Yellow Sea, putting it in an ideal position to become a global export base for the Northeast Asian automobile industry.






임진년 평택항, 자동차 수출선적으로 분주

우리나라 주력 수출품목인 자동차. 자동차 수출 증가로 운송업체들도 더욱 바빠지고 있습니다. 이에 따라 위치와 첨단시설을 앞세운 평택항이 울산항에 이어 자동차 수출입 제1항만으로 급부상하고 있습니다.

이곳 평택항 자동차 전용 부두에서는 수출 차량 선적이 한창입니다.

자동차 6대를 실은 대형캐리어가 부두에 도착하면, 포장이 뜯기지 않은 수출용 차량들이 조심스럽게 내려져 야적장으로 이동됩니다.

넓은 야적장에는 이미 9000여대의 자동차들이 해외로 나갈 차례를 기다리고 있습니다.

지난해 이곳 평택항의 자동차 수출입 물동량은 약 120만대로 울산항에 이어 2번째로 100만대를 돌파했습니다.


수출 물동량은 75만대를 넘었고, 해외에서 수입되는 자동차의 90%도 이곳을 거쳐 들어오고 있습니다.

이와 같은 물동량 처리는 자동차 전문 터미널 개발을 통해 자동차 수출입 최적의 조건을 갖춘 항만으로 성장했기 때문에 가능한 일입니다.

~ 다른 항은 한 선석은 자동차, 한 선석은 일반화물, 잡화 그러니까 분진이 많은 화물을 처리하는데 여기는 선석 자체가 자동차 선석끼리 붙어있어요. 그러다보니 분진이 날 일이 없어요.

또한 플로팅 푼툰시설을 통해 조수 간만의 차이와 관계없이 24시간 작업을 할 수 있는 장점도 있습니다.

현재 평택항의 자동차 전용 선석은 4개.

1개 선석이 추가 개발되면, 일렬로 연결된 5개 자동차 전용 선석의 시너지 효과는 더욱 커질 것입니다.

~ 앞으로 1개 선석을 2016년까지 개발할 계획인데, 그러면 총 5개 선석이 됩니다. 그 선석을 활용해서 대중국, 대일본 등 전세계적으로 자동차를 수출입할 수 있는 거점 부두가 될 것으로 확신합니다.


평택항은 황해권이라는 지리적 이점을 바탕으로 동북아시아의 자동차 허브 항만으로 발전할 수 있을 것으로 보입니다.
