Can you believe I have never actually played this game before this year?!
And I am an absolutely massive Dragon Quest/ Dragon Warrior fan!
In fact, the very first Dragon Warrior that debuted in North America on the NES was the very first RPG I ever completed, and I can remember every epic moment of it - awww, nostalgic memories!
I guess I shouldn't be too hard on myself for not playing Dragon Quest V until this year, because it was actually never released on the SNES console in North America.
You can play the remake for it on the DS, but I actually prefer the original old school graphics and dynamics, so I sought out an English translated physical copy of the game I could actually play on my original Super Nintendo.
After finding one on eBay for about $40 including shipping and handling, I was all ready to start my brand new adventure playing Dragon Quest V for the first time!
And man oh man, was it an awesome adventure!
Yeah sure, it was English translated and it wasn't perfect by any means, but it was very clear that this fifth installment in the famed franchise upped the level of gameplay in almost every single possible way, including expansive and more dynamic dungeons, the new monster taming capability, challenging but fair boss battles, and a truly awesome story.
In fact, the only real aspects I could think of offering as criticisms to this game is that maybe it was a little too linear at times and that there was a frequent and reoccurring, potentially overbearing religious theme, but nothing that an awesome story and new dynamic gameplay couldn't balance out.
Also, the encounter rate was pretty high, but I guess I have always thought of that as not necessarily being a bad thing, since it helped your character levels advance more quickly.
Overall, if you like playing traditional RPG's - more specifically turn-based JRPG's - and if you especially like the 1st through 4th games in the Dragon Quest/ Dragon Warrior franchise, you should definitely find a copy of this game and play it.
It's definitely a must play for RPG enthusiasts in my mind, hands down!
Damn, it feels good to be a gamer!
