Welcome back to The Green Yard and another great growing update video. Passion Fruit vines are native to South and Central America, specifically Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and many other places. They have been spread out around the world in both tropical and subtropical environments. In total there are over 550 species of passion fruit. We grow two varieties in The Green Yard, specifically Purple Possum and Yellow Passion Fruit. Passion Fruit thrive in the Phoenix area and are an easy, edible vine to grow. In this video I go through some of their requirements and what it's like to grow a Passion Fruit Vine in Phoenix. They require a lower soil PH, lots of food (compost, fish emulsion, etc.) and their main roots/trunks to be shaded throughout the day. The last one is the most important aspect to keep in mind when planting a Passion Fruit Vine. If the trunk of the vine is not in the shade the tree will probably not thrive. They do enjoy growing into our full sun and the vine itself does not require any sun or cold protection. They also provide the benefit of beautiful flowers, amazing fruit and Gulf Fritillary Butterflies.
