Video Summary:
Gold is tasteless and offers no nutritional value whatsoever. For some reason people out there are serving ‘edible gold’ dishes in their restaurants, and for some other reason, people are actually eating them.
Restaurants use gold leaf sheets in their creations. Gold equals luxury. Eating gold is really all about people wanting to feel superior and wanting to draw attention to themselves. It’s more about the act of being able to eat the gold.
In Europe, edible gold arrived in the Middle Ages. It was used to decorate dishes for the most luxurious banquets.
The Native Americans were convinced that by eating gold, they were able to levitate bodies.
Alchemists from the fifteenth century considered that medicines based on gold could actually cure diseases.
Apothecaries in Italy began coating medicine with gold leaf to cover up their bitter taste.
After the 17th century using gold in food started fading away. It almost disappeared from culinary traditions altogether.
In 1981, Gualtiero Marchesi, the most famous Italian chef in the world, rekindled the use of edible gold. He inspired starred chefs, award-winning bartenders, and even cake designers to use gold leaf in their cuisines and creations.
Gold is a particularly non-reactive element and is not absorbed during the digestion process, so it is safe to eat.
