This post war release, "Burma Victoria" (1946) from the British perspective covers the Burma campaign. It should be mentioned this film contains some politically outdated and offensive terms. A comparable feature showcasing the American viewpoint on the battle is “The Stillwell Road” narrated by Ronald Reagan. This feature, directed by Roy Bolting and written by Frank Harvey was a project of the Army Film and Photographic Unit. The Burma campaign was fought primarily between British and Chinese forces with support from the US forces against Japan, Thailand and the Indian National Army. This feature shows the difficulties faced during the campaign including climate; such a major monsoon, terrain, as well as the effects of diseases such as dysentery and malaria. “Burma Victory” also details the vital role of air supplies. Battles included are Imphal and Kohima, the drive on Mandalay, and the Arakan campaign. Stillwell and the Sino-American Myitkyina Task Force (MTF) get a feature. The documentary begins with an outline on geography, climate and the extent of Japanese conquest. It was produced the British Army Film Unit from material compiled by British, Indian, and American combat cameraman of SEAC (:09). A map notes locations of Japanese forces in 1943 preparing for the 1944 strike on Bengal (:54). Footage follows of a garrison under aerial attack. Machine gun bullet belts feed in guns by troops in dug out positions (1:28). The smoking hills of Kohima (1:49) follow. American pilots cross (1:54) 300 miles for a cargo drop. A three man garrison loads shells in a trench position (2:50). The map returns (3:13); northern positions and the site of a highway under construction are noted. American infantrymen commanded by Brigadier General Frank Merill move for the Myitkyina airfield (14:27). Merrill’s marauders move for the airfield (15:36). Mountbatten speaks at the Supreme Commander’s headquarters base (18:35). Machetes hack at jungle brush (22:16). Forces use a rope to cross rapids (24:26) and bamboo pieces to set up camp in order to wait out a monsoon (25:24). A night fight follows (26:46). Columns of the British 36th division and the MARS Task Force push southeast (37:33). Scenes follow from the Ledo Road in January of 1945 (38:00). General Oliver Leese (39:11) meets with troops in Southeast Asia. The Eastern fleet erupts in gun blasts (36:45). A view from LVT’s show shoreline installations erupting (40:20). Mountbatten meets war officials over the river crossing (41:44). Completed transport vessels appear across the shoreline (44:51). The bridgehead in Mandalay is noted on a map (45:16). Bomber planes drop payloads (47:28). Tank divisions break out from Mandalay (48:02). Low flying RAF aerial attacks follow over Fort Dufferin (49:18). Scenes follow from March 20th as the city is freed (50:23). Tank warfare erupts from August of 1945 (53:15). Close shots show a SEAC memo from the Supreme Commander (54:41) boasting of the wars conclusion. This was a Warner Brothers release (55:32).
