In a historic move, the first batch of 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks has arrived in Taiwan, marking the first U.S. delivery of this advanced armor to the island in 30 years. The tanks, a variant of the U.S. Army's M1 Abrams main battle tank, were delivered to Taipei Port on Sunday, December 15, before being transported to a Taiwanese Army training center in northern Hsinchu County.
This delivery is part of a larger $1.25 billion deal approved by the U.S. in 2019, which includes 108 M1A2T tanks manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense confirmed two more batches, including 42 tanks, will arrive over the next two years.
This development comes amid rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region and is seen as a major step in strengthening Taiwan's defense capabilities.
