On April 28, 1996 a lone gunman entered the site and killed 35 people and wounded many others, physically and mentally. It was a tragedy not only for the people who were here, for the community, but nationally and internationally. This is a story of the economic recovery and resilience of the Port Arthur Historic Site following the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, Australia.
"Immediately following the shooting the focus was on the visitors, the staff, and everybody else who was impacted by the incident. For three weeks the site was closed. A lot of decisions had to be made during that time including the long term future of the site." - Danial Rochford, Director of Tourism Operations
