7. SOUNDBITE (French) Thomas Bompard, head of impressionist and modern art department, Sotheby's France:
"This painting has been shown to the public during an exhibition in June 1932. So Picasso painted it between December 1931 and January 1932 for an exhibition in June the same year. And then we lose a bit the trace of the painting until 1940 where we find it again in New York at the Valentine gallery. And since that time, the painting went into several prestigious American private collections. And each of these collectors had never agreed to lend the painting for the numerous retrospectives organized around the world."
8. Pan details of Picasso's painting "La Lecture"
9. SOUNDBITE (French) Thomas Bompard, head of impressionist and modern art department, Sotheby's France:
"To my point of view, the only thing that could prevent this oil on panel painting from breaking a new record is its size. There are portraits of Marie-Thrse Walter of bigger size so I don't think that this painting will go over 100 million Dollars. Now, it has all the assets to go over its estimation, that means being auctioned for about 30 million Euros."
10. Wide shot of Thomas Bompard holding another Picasso's painting "Portrait d'Olga" (portrait of the artist's first wife, Olga Khokhlova, painted in 1923) next to "La Lecture" (painted in 1932)
11. Close up Picasso's painting "Portrait d'Olga (painted in 1923)
12. Wide shot of Picasso's painting "Nu couche" (painted in 1967 and part of a series inspired by the final love of the artist's life, Jacqueline Roque)
13. Close up of Picasso's painting "Nu couche"
STORYLINE
PICASSO'S 'LA LECTURE' TO BE SOLD IN LONDON
A major painting of Pablo Picasso which has not been seen publicly for the last seventy years will go under the hammer in London on February 8th.
"La lecture", painted in 1932 and depicting Picasso's lover Marie-Thrse Walter, will be sold during the Impressionist And Modern Art auction held by Sotheby's.
And each of these collectors had never agreed to lend the painting for the numerous retrospectives organized around the world," said Thomas Bompard, the head of impressionist and modern art department, Sotheby's France.
Property of an American private collector, the 65.5 by 51 centimetres painting is expected to fetch between 14 and 21 million Euros, and maybe more.
Two other paintings by Picasso, "Portrait d'Olga" and "Nu couche" will also be sold during that auction.
