Diplomatic relations between Indonesia – Republic of Korea (ROK) were established in September 1973 and in a few years, will mark 50 years of official ties. With a span of almost five decades of relations, ties between Jakarta and Seoul have been improving significantly. President Moon Jae-In officially declared the ROK’s ‘New Southern Policy’ that put forward the ‘3Ps’ of people, prosperity, and peace in 2017. The placing of ‘people’ as the first of the ‘3Ps’ is an important part of the policy in order to get more understanding of the Southeast Asian community, including Indonesia, to further cooperation that has been built in many sectors.
In this regard, it entails deepening research to analyze the perception of Indonesian society, especially millennials, towards their understanding about South Korea. To fill this gap, the Habibie Center conducted a public opinion survey involving 400 respondents, aged 20-39 years old living in Surabaya. The survey finding is expected to help stakeholders from Indonesia and South Korea in formulating a better strategy to strengthen Indonesia-South Korea relations and to increase the understanding as well as behavior of Indonesian society towards South Korea in the future.
