To make a box, you need to first determine how tall your contents will be. Make sure the depth is high enough to accommodate your contents without smashing them. This is your first measurement and let's assume it is 2" tall. Write this number down.
Next, determine the largest object in length and width in your box. We will assume it is 5 x 7". You need to add some give room so add 1/4" to length and width.
To determine the size of your paper:
Add
5"width
+ 1/4" for extra width
+ 2" for one side
+ 2" for the other side
total is 9 1/4" for your width
for length
7"
+ 1/4" for extra space
+ 2" for the one side
+ 2" for the other side
total is 11 1/4" in length
You will cut your paper 9 1/4 x 11 1/4" and score each side at 2". Fold your score lines and cut small notches on the sides to the score line. Use really strong adhesive, score tape, tear tape or heavy duty liquid glue. This is the base of the box. To line the box,
measure the sides (length and width) and subtract 1/4" and the sides should be 2" tall so subtract 1/4" and these are the measurements for the pieces to line the insides of your bottom of your box.
To make the lid of your box, the height is going to be 1 1/2" tall. You need to add 1/8" to made your lid fix to the length and width.
Width
5"
1/4" for excess which is 2/8"
1 1/2" for side
1 1/2" for other side
1/8" to make lid fit
total is 8 3/8"
Height
7"
1/4" for excess which is 2/8"
1 1/2" for side
1 1/2" for other side
1/8" for lid
total is 10 3/8"
Cut your paper to these measurements and score at 1 1/2" on all four sides then follow the directions above to fold, notch and glue your box and use the same directions to line the sides of your box for stability. You won't need to do this on a small box and can reduce your lid size by 1/16".
Embellish your box as you would like. You've made a box!
